Little thoughts from the Big Apple

Big Sur

So this week was incredible.

My mom and I took a trip up the California coast from LA to Monterey. For about seventy-five miles north of San Luis Obispo, the Pacific Coast Highway is basically cut into the edge of the Santa Lucia mountains. The landscape couldn’t be more dramatic; the jagged, rocky mountain peaks plunge directly into the Pacific Ocean.

As you drive, you feel as though your car is teetering on the edge of a cliff. At points, it is. The experience is terrifying, but also incredibly exhilarating.

For most of our trip, the road was covered in fog. It was mystical and beyond beautiful and hard to put into words. Suffice it to say that it’s a drive everyone needs to make at least once in their lifetime.

The trip was definitely a spiritual experience for me–I’ve never felt more in awe of our beautiful planet. I can’t wait to go back and do it again–next time, I want to go farther north past San Francisco and into the redwoods.

What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

  1. I drove this stretch of highway a few years ago, and it remains one of my favorite experiences of my life. So breathtakingly gorgeous that it’s hard to put into words!

  2. SO glad you commented on my blog as I love yours. This part of the country is immediately going on my bucket list — looks like so much fun!

  3. That view is absolutely beautiful! Looks like it was definitely worth the drive.

  4. The photos are stunning! I remember driving across the Nullarbor Plain when we moved from one side of Australia to the other. Its such a vast expanse you can’t help but feel like there is nothing to even think about, other than you being alone. Its strangely comforting!

  5. Breathtaking photos, Gigi! I’ve only been to Big Sur once but really enjoyed the trip. There are so many beautiful places in the world, but I’d have to say my favorite places would be Italy (Rome, Cinque Terre, and the Amalfi Coast are all so beautiful) and Croatia (Plitvice Lakes and Hvar Island are gorgeous).

    • Why thank you, Carolyn! I’m jealous you’ve been so many beautiful places–I am Croatian, so visiting there is on the top of my wish list. I hope you took lots and lots of photos of your own!

  6. Oh how I miss my California home!! Agreed, you MUST drive up the coast of CA at some point in your life. So, I’m a bit biased, but I think if you go up North it’s even better 🙂 I’m loving the fun mix of content you have up on your blog, Gigi! All very well-written.
